Jordan: GCC Organises Food Security Talks In Jordan

On April 7, GCC in Jordan was able to have Eng. Muttasim Al-Hayari to give a presentation on the status of food security in Jordan. Mr. Hayari represented the Jordanian Hashemite Fund for Human Development (JOHUD) on the National Alliance Against Hunger and Malnutrition (NAJMAH).

NAJMAH was established in 2004 to support government programs in combating hunger and enhancing food security in Jordan. It is hosted by JOHUD and works in a national partnership with government, civil society and private sector organizations in formulating policies and projects for food security. In the presentation basic facts about Jordan were given: Jordan is a resource poor country with a population of more than six million. Jordan is self-sufficient in the production of vegetables, poultry, eggs, fruits and 50% of milk and dairy but relies mostly on imports of wheat, cereals, fodder and on the import of other goods such as oil, seeds and rice.

Jordanian GCC leaders learned about the various initiatives already taken by NAJMAH, asked many questions about the different problems facing food security and were engaged in the discussion about possible approaches to food security.
