Lebanon’s Most Precious Symbol Will Disappear
Many of the nearly 200 Lebanese youth who gathered to mark the beginning of a campaign against climate change were also Global Citizen Corps leaders, present at an event so big that it attracted the attention of Lebanon’s biggest English-language newspaper, The Daily Star, which reported on the event.
This environmental campaign, called “20:12” because its founders aim to reduce carbon emissions by one fifth by 2012, will be held in countries across the Middle East.
But in Lebanon, a country whose national symbol is the cedar tree, it may hold a special significance.
As GCC Program Manager Dahlia Khoury told the newspaper, “If we continue to live as we are, Lebanon’s most precious symbol, the cedars, will be first to disappear.”
For GCC leaders, it's another chance to work towards change.
