Iraq: Wassit- Human Interest

Ghanem Maza’al, 50 years old, is the father of seven children in the Al-Shuhada neighborhood in Southern Iraq. The neighborhood is largely composed of internally displaced persons (IDPs) who struggle daily just to get food, clothes, and other necessities. Ghanem was on his way to work one day when he came across a group of GCC youth who were carrying food and materials to prepare for Global Food Day. Ghanem chose to abandon work for the day, forgoing the $15 salary he would have made, in order to open his house to the youth and help them to cook and distribute food to the people of the Al-Shuhada neighborhood.
