4. NEW PROJECT PROPOSAL - POSITIVE ROLE MODELS FOR GIRLS.  A new project has been proposed called "Queen Mother Yaa Asantewaa." This project involves students reading the book "When You See Water, Call It Water: The Story of Queen Mother Yaa Asantewaa".  This book tells the story of the Queen Mother of Ghana--as re-told to Shondra, a young African-American girl, by her grandfather. In this project, students learn about the Ashanti culture, the different views of war between the Ashanti and British empires, and the leadership and courage of the Queen Mother Nana. They will create a timeline, conduct research, consider opposing viewpoints, and write and cooperatively present a news broadcast to communicate the results of their research.  The project aims to: 1) Broaden students’ understanding of the culture, achievements, and contributions to world history of ancient African empires; 2) Motivate students to develop leadership qualities by examining the stories of courage and leadership of historic African women leaders; and 3) Provide images of beautiful, intelligent and powerful African women as positive models for students of all backgrounds, and especially for girls of African descent.   Respond to the Project about Queen Mother Yaa Asantewaa topic in the iEARN Teachers Forum.
