Iraq: Sulaimanyah - Fundraising, partnerships and sending Orphans to school
For the beginning of Ramadan (the holy month for Muslims), GCC youth in the city of Sulimaniya started planning a project targeting the orphans of the city through a fundraising project. In early August a group of GCC youth in Suli, began this action by hold a meeting with program officer in Sulimaniya and discussed the idea of working on fundraising project for about 50 orphans, the project idea focused on visit the big companies, and some of rich people in the city to solicit donations to help about 50 children.
The first step in the plan was looking for partners to nominate the orphans, and get behind the project. GCC youth created a partnership with the “Kurdish Islamic League” who has a history of supporting orphans in the area. The youth agreed with the partner on a mechanism of work and moved onto the second aspect of the project and began the challenging work of looking for more funders. The work of raising money is very challenging, but the GCC youth were persistent and were able to secure about $4000 dollars from local businesses and individuals. Before collecting the money, the youth have several ideas about what materials should purchased with this money, some of these ideas were to purchase deferent home materials, the other ideas were to help them by purchasing clothes for the 50 orphans.
After long discussions the youth decided to expand the numbers of orphan beneficiaries to 100. The youth agreed that the greatest challenged was purchasing the school uniforms and supplies needed for starting school.
On September 6th, the GCC youth arranged event to distribute the gifts (school costume and stationary) to the orphans. The orphans and families were the deeply thankful to the youth and the of director of Kurdish Islamic League.
