Hacker School: Three-month, full-time school in New York

Hacker School is a three-month, full-time school in New York for becoming a better programmer. We're free as in beer, and provide space, a little structure, time to focus, and a friendly community of smart builders dedicated to self-improvement.

Applications are open for the Summer 2012 batch of Hacker School. The deadline to apply is May 7, though we'll accept late applications. It will run from June 4 to August 25. The batch will be hosted at Etsy, which is also sponsoring $50,000 worth of scholarships for female programmers (Hacker School remains free for all students; the scholarship money is for living expenses). We're trying to make this batch at least 50% women.

While Hacker School is free, we realize that living in New York is not. The best answer for how to pay for Hacker School is to save up some cash. You will be much happier and more productive during your batch if you don't have to worry about money.

A few people have been able to hold down part-time jobs or contracting work while attending Hacker School, but it's hard and we don't recommended it. Multiple people have had to drop out midway through the batch because their contracting work got in the way of Hacker School. If you're not sure if you can handle contracting work and Hacker School, you probably can't. Save up some money and apply for the next batch. We promise we'll still be here.

Scheduling conflicts

Hacker School is a full-time commitment. Plan to be there every day we meet and for all scheduled events (Monday dinners, etc.). We of course understand if you have to miss a day for a wedding, an emergency, or some other important event, but please tell us ahead of time. Please don't plan on taking vacations during Hacker School. Our time together is precious and we don't have a lot of it.

What Hacker School Is

Hacker School is a three-month, immersive school for becoming a better programmer. It's like a writers retreat for hackers. We (Nick, Dave and Sonali) run the program every four months in New York and meet Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11am to 7pm. We provide space, time to focus, and a friendly community dedicated to self-improvement.
