Pakisthan: Quetta - GCC Youth in Quetta light the streets for saftey
Wajid Agha lives in Killi Barat, Quetta an area where people were very depressed and afraid of the street crimes. There might have been a very few lucky people who are not the victim of the street crimes .
The community service project “Installation of street lights” accomplished by installation of 12 street lights at Killi Barat Street. Project costs total of PKR, 35000, where CYAAD contributed 27000 and rest of the amount contributed by the community. The project aimed to provide the street with light to decrease the street crime in respective locality. In the earlier meeting with community members, led by youth leader a committee of nine members formed to sketch the plan of action for implementation of project, and closely mointored the project to ensure transparency during the project life.
The project took less than one month including the installation of the lights Now streets are illuminated with the beautiful lights. This project not only decreased the rate of the street crimes but also reduced the fear among the community.
Youth and peer leaders used the project management cycle and completed the project under their own leadership with guidance and mentoring of GCC program team.
Mr. Agha and his peers proposed their community service project after series of brain storming sessions, meetings and social mapping with community members. After the series of meetings ,they figured out root cause of the street crimes in their respective community was lack of street lights . Wajid presented his idea in front of panelists and got recommendation for implementation of the project which was later subjected to approval from concerned government department and contribution from community through fund raising.Youth leader Wajid and his peer adopted strategy of door to door visit in community for fund raising and collected PKR, 8000 rupees as community contribution.
