In recognition of Global Health Day, GCC leaders in Sulaimanyah participated in an intensive first aid training session. After taking part in an initial GCC member only training for the first day, the leaders engaged with non-members on the second day.

Dereh, a charismatic and confident 21 year-old Iraqi Kurdistan girl, lives with her grandmother, mother, and sister, she studies medicine in university, and has set a goal to improve the TB facilities in her local hospital. She is also a member of the Global Citizen Corps (GCC).

The elderly often face marginalization within their communities. They are mistreated and disrespected. However the elderly have many important lessons to teach us.  The have life experiences from which they can draw on and offer us wisdom and advice.

Iraq: Kalar - Showing Youth the Fun Side of Green

In Kalar, GCC Youth implemented an athletic community service project, which served to revitalize one of the city’s playgrounds.  The Youth supplied a water pump for watering the grass, hoses, wastebaskets, and materials to repair destroyed parts of the fences. 

Iraq: Kut - Vocational Training and Community Cooperation

GCC Youth in Kut – coordinating with the Department of Youth and Sport, the Department of Social Work and Social Affairs, as well as some local tradesmen – held a 5 day training designed to create job opportunities.  The event was meant to help local youth, who lacked in education and vocational skills, develop some necessary trade skills needed for employment. 

Iraq: Sulaimaniya - GCC Youth Make Anti-Smoking Statement

GCC youth in Sulimaniya implemented a smoking awareness campaign in one of the city’s big parks.  The activity was comprised of two phases, the first being the presentation of two-hour sessions for GCC youth about the harms of smoking.
