Mercy Corps’ Pakistani flood relief efforts
Mercy Corps is joining with many other international relief agencies to help the 20 million Pakistanis affected by the recent flood. It has been working in Pakistan since 1986, and it has been using these operations to quickly respond to the areas where help is needed most. Mercy Corps has been working in the Swat Valley, distributing clean water to 25,000 people per day through water tanks, high-volume filtration units and water purification tablets, giving out hundreds of food kits, containing food basics like cooking oil, sugar, salt, rice, and tool kits with wheelbarrows, shovels, hammers and other tools to help citizens start the clean up process. It has been disinfecting and improving water filling stations, to help improve the quality of water that Pakistanis are collecting. On top of this, Mercy Corps has also been building new water points and repairing hand pumps, to make clean water more available.
Mercy Corps is also planning to expand its flood relief operations into the Sindh province. It has recently sent out a team to make an assessment of what is needed in the region, and it is planning on starting to provide clean water to thousands soon, along with distributing hygiene kits and opening a series of mobile health units to treat widespread illnesses. Besides these immediate relief efforts, Mercy Corps is planning to start up programs to help Pakistanis find work and income, to provide long term relief. Mercy Corps is trying to do a great deal to help out in Pakistan, expanding out where needed, meeting the needs of the millions affected by this horrible event, but it needs your help. Mercy Corps has a feature on its website that allows you to create a personal fundraising page, which will allow you to raise funds to help with relief efforts, and spread word about the disaster amongst your friends and family. Do your part to help Mercy Corps save lives.
