Haiti: From Rescue to Recovery

Nearly 2 weeks after a powerful earthquake rattled Haiti, resources are gradually shifting from rescue to recovery. The need for shelter is most urgent, as nearly 1 million people remain homeless.

On Monday, leaders from 20 nations convened in Montreal and agreed on a 10-year rebuilding effort that would create an even better Port-au-Prince and would cost $3 billion. Though the Montreal Summit addressed long-term reconstruction, Haitian president René Préval declared that his country needed 36 million emergency food rations and 200,000 tents immediately to accommodate the growing number of people needing temporary shelter.

The most vulnerable populations are children under five years old and women who are pregnant or breast-feeding.
